You rely on your Los Banos, CA, home’s heating and cooling system to provide relief from the hot and humid summer days and chilly winter nights. As your HVAC contractor, we recommend professional installation and regular preventive maintenance in order to prevent many common HVAC problems. However, there are some common HVAC issues that you should be aware of, including these three problems.

Clogged Air Filters

According to Energy Saver, one of the most common problems with air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces is a clogged filter. The air filter captures tiny particles. After one to three months, the filter’s pores become filled with those particles. The clogged filter hinders airflow. This causes less heated or cooled air to reach your living spaces. It also forces the HVAC system to work harder, which can lead to extra wear and tear and a shorter HVAC system lifespan.

Dirty Coils, Ducts or Drains

Heat pumps and air conditioners have an outdoor unit and a condensate drain. The outdoor units are constantly exposed to the elements, and pollen, dust, dirt and plant debris can fall onto the coils and fins. This inhibits airflow and can lead to an overheated motor or fan. Dirty or obstructed condensate drains prevent the condensed water from your home’s air from draining out of the heat pump or air conditioner, which leads to humidity problems. Dirty or loose air ducts also impede the flow of cooled or warmed air in your living spaces.

Thermostat and Electrical Issues

Wires may become loose over time. They can also get damaged from heat or vibrations. A wiring or capacitor issue could cause your HVAC system to short-cycle or shut down. Thermostat problems are also common. A loose, frayed or damaged wire in the thermostat prevents effective control of heating or cooling in your home.
